Putonghua Studio (package org.igears.putonghua) is an on-device Mandarin learning app. No account or sign-in is required. Learning progress and settings stay on your device. There is no analytics SDK and no app backend that receives your learning data.
Information stored on your device
The app may store practice progress, mastery, streaks, XP, achievements, daily-goal settings, interface language, accessibility-related settings (such as speech speed and selected TTS voice identifier), and remove-ads purchase entitlement in private storage on your device.
Legacy best-score values may be imported one time from a previous version of the app if present on the device. This information remains on the device unless you clear app data, uninstall the app, or allow Android backup/restore to transfer it.
Microphone and speech recognition
If you use listen-and-repeat practice, the app requests the microphone permission only when you start that feature. Speech is processed using Android’s on-device speech recognition where available. The app compares recognized text with the target phrase for practice feedback and does not claim to score tones, accent, or overall proficiency.
The app does not save microphone audio and does not upload recordings to an app-operated server.
Text-to-speech and optional on-device AI
Pronunciation playback uses the Mandarin text-to-speech engine and voices installed on your device. Voice availability and quality depend on your device and system settings.
On compatible devices, optional explanations may use Google ML Kit’s on-device Gemini Nano / Prompt API. Prompts for this feature are processed on device; the app does not send them to an app-operated backend. Fixed lesson explanations always remain available.
Advertising and purchases
The free version may show advertisements powered by Google AdMob after you complete 10 ad-free practice sessions (from the 11th session onward). Ads may use your device’s advertising ID and related signals as described in Google’s advertising policies.
You can remove ads with a one-time in-app purchase processed by Google Play Billing. We do not receive or store your payment-card details.
Permissions and data sharing
RECORD_AUDIO is used only for listen-and-repeat after you tap start; other learning modes do not require it. Internet, network state, and advertising ID permissions may be used for optional ads and Play Billing.
We do not sell personal data and do not share learning progress with third parties through the app. Platform services provided by Google/Android (system TTS, speech recognition, optional on-device model download, Play distribution, and device backup) operate under their own terms and privacy policies.
Children and deletion
The app is a general language-learning tool and is not directed at children under 13 as a primary audience. Parents and guardians who allow younger learners to practise should supervise device permissions, especially the microphone.
Because progress is stored on device, you can delete it at any time by clearing the app’s storage in Android settings or by uninstalling the app.
